Education and Training Core Program Director (Faculty Position)

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

Requirements:

Minimum of a Doctoral Degree in Public Health, Education (with public health experience), or other relevant disciplinary areas and at least 5 years’ experience mentoring Indigenous scholars.

Salary commensurate with experience.

Description: The Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health (Center) is seeking a faculty member to serve as our Education and Training Core Director. The Center is located within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). Our mission is to work in partnership with communities to advance Indigenous well-being and leadership to the highest level. Our four core divisions at our Center include Research, Training, Policy, and Wise Practices, which shares proven programs with interested Indigenous communities in the US and worldwide. The Education and Training Core Director will hold a faculty appointment at the JHSPH and will lead the training and education efforts of the Center. The Education and Training Core Director will develop the program strategy, help raise funds to support the strategy, implement and assess the education and training efforts of the Center. In addition, the Education and Training Core Director will be responsible for mentoring and advising Indigenous junior faculty and Indigenous masters and doctoral scholars; developing and teaching a variety of courses, particularly for new DrPH and MPH concentrations in Indigenous Health during the academic terms and summer and winter institutes. The Education and Training Core Director will work closely with other Center faculty and the Training Team to manage all Center related training programs.

The Education and Training Core Director will report to the core leadership of the Center who include:

  • Allison Barlow, PhD, MPH, Executive Director
  • Don Warne, MD, MPH, Center Co-Director and DrPH/MPH Indigenous Health Concentration Director
  • Jennifer Dupuis, MBA, Director of Operations

Specific responsibilities:

  • Establish, implement, and maintain strategic direction of the Center’s Education and Training Core.
  • Help develop and oversee implementation of Indigenous DrPH and MPH concentrations offered through JHSPH.
  • Recruit, mentor and advise Center junior faculty and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Recruit, mentor, advise, and support Center’s Indigenous graduate scholars, Institute and Certificate scholars, post-baccalaureate fellows, and summer interns.
  • Write grants to fund and maintain training programs.
  • Lead in management of training budgets.
  • Supervise, mentor, and manage Education and Training Program team.
  • Lead summer and winter institute courses, which comprise the 18-credit Public Health Certificate in American Indian Health.
  • Market and provide ongoing development for Center’s Public Health Certificate in American Indian Health.
  • Provide strategic input into the Center’s professional training program for paraprofessional Indigenous team members employed by the Center.
  • Oversee and manage the Center’s Indigenous student scholarship program.
  • Provide ongoing support and leadership to “Native Circle,” which is a JHSPH Indigenous student advocacy and support group founded by the Center.
  • Participate as key faculty member in Center research-related training programs.
  • Maintain working knowledge of all the Center’s core areas Training, Research, Policy, and Wise Practices.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Doctoral Degree in Public Health, Education, or relevant field.
  • At least five years of experience in promoting training activities within an academic setting and experience working in public health.
  • Experience with curriculum and mentorship program development.
  • Knowledge of pedagogical approaches to education.
  • Experience working with Indigenous scholars and communities.

Skills:

  • Experience teaching, academic advising, and mentoring graduate-level Indigenous students.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds for training and/or research programs.
  • Strong writing, speaking, and networking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to counsel/mentor in an academic setting.
  • Team player with strong diplomacy skills.
  • Cross cultural experience.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft 365 software (e.g. Word, Excel, Teams, etc.).
  • Project management skills.
  • Independent learner and worker.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Self motivated and driven.
  • Entrepreneurial and creative in evolving approaches to training mission.
  • Intellectually curious with a commitment to pursue and promote training and capacity building within American Indian populations.

Other:

  • This position will be based in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • Ability to travel primarily in the US and occasionally abroad for meetings/trainings to fulfill the mission of the training program.
  • Prior experience in teaching, academic counseling, and student mentoring at graduate and doctoral level.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with intimate knowledge or experience working with Indigenous communities.
