Biography

Dr. Katie Nelson joined the Center for Indigenous Health in August of 2023. She works as an Assistant Scientist in Baltimore, MD, supporting efforts across the Social and Behavioral Intervention teams. Katie’s research interests center around health care access and care provision for communities disproportionately burdened by serious illness. She is committed to learning from and walking alongside Indigenous communities to promote health equity and quality of life.

Prior to joining the Center, Katie worked as a Registered Nurse for seven years in various inpatient and community-based settings across Minnesota and Maryland. As a hospice nurse, she had the opportunity to care for many Native patients and families, which ignited her passion for researching ways to mitigate the pervasive inequities experienced by many along the care continuum. Katie has expertise in mixed-methods, qualitative, and community-based participatory research, as well as program evaluation.

Katie holds an MSN and PhD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and a BS in Public Health from the University of Minnesota. Outside of work, Katie can be found hiking, camping, or on the water with her husband, family, and friends.
