In this webinar, Susan Stellin, MPH introduces the Covering Drugs guide, which compiles survey data, reports, best practice guidelines, and other resources to support more informed research and reporting about substance use, addiction, treatment, recovery, and other related topics. Organized around questions people often ask, the goal is to organize and make the vast amount of information available easier to find and use. This webinar gives an overview of the guide’s content and approach, highlighting topics such as understanding the current drug supply, screening for risky alcohol or drug use, overdose prevention, treatment locators, recovery capital, and reporting on Indigenous communities.
Susan Stellin, MPH is a writer, educator, and researcher focusing on health-centered responses to substance use and addiction. As a 2025-2026 Reynolds Journalism Institute fellow, she created Covering Drugs (www.coveringdrugs.org), a free 140-page resource guide for research and reporting on substance use, addiction, treatment, recovery, and other topics. She facilitates training workshops for the Opioid Response Network and has collaborated with researchers on dissemination and community engagement strategies. As a reporter, Susan was a regular contributor to The New York Times for more than 15 years, and is the co-author of Chancers, a dual memoir written with her husband Graham MacIndoe about his journey through addiction, incarceration, and recovery, which was published by Random House in 2016.
