Biography
Magdalena Serrano is a descendant of the San Manuel Band of Serrano people from the village of Cabazones. She has never known a time when she was not interested in a public health career within American Indian communities. Currently, she is a LCSW and Health Educator with Community Health Centers of the Central Coast Indigenous Outreach Programs in Santa Barbara County, CA.
She received a MSW from University of Southern California in 2007, and a BA in Sociology from UCLA in 2005. Magdalena began her certificate coursework with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in January, 2012, and recently completed the program in July, 2015.
Magdalenas approach to the challenges with working in behavioral health has completely evolved since participating in the Johns Hopkins Public Health Training Institutes. She values the multidisciplinary and patient-centered partnership models studied in these courses, and collaborates with Tribal Leaders, Administrators, Board of Directors, and Medical team to evaluate programs and policies which impact her behavioral health strategies.
