About

Dr. Katie Nelson joined the Center for Indigenous Health in August 2023. She works as an Assistant Scientist in Baltimore, MD, and holds a Joint Appointment in the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Katie supports efforts across several Social and Behavioral Intervention teams and has expertise in mixed-methods, qualitative, and community-based participatory research, as well as program implementation and evaluation.

Katie’s research interests center around care access and provision for communities disproportionately burdened by serious illness, as well as supporting and training the next generation of nurses and public health professionals to work in rural, low-resourced settings. A Registered Nurse by training, Katie has worked in a variety of inpatient and community-based settings across the Great Plains, Midwest, and Northeastern regions. Katie is also an avid animal lover and is leading a growing effort to support the safety and welfare of dogs in tribal communities. She is committed to learning from and walking alongside Indigenous communities to support community-identified needs that promote health equity and quality of life.

Katie holds a PhD and MSN from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and a BS in Public Health from the University of Minnesota. Outside of work, she can be found hiking, camping, and enjoying the outdoors with her husband and their dogs.
