Natalie Exum, Ph.D, M.S., is an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has been working with the Center since May 2020, when the water access crisis on the Navajo Nation presented challenges for handwashing and water hauling during the pandemic. She is currently working with the Center on Navajo Water Access Projects, namely the Diné Household Water Survey. Her expertise includes the field of drinking water systems and exposure science. Dr. Exum’s laboratory, located in Baltimore, Maryland, focuses on applying principles of environmental microbiology, data science, and statistics to protect public health through community-engaged research methods.
Dr. Exum’s training was in both environmental engineering (Stanford University, M.S.) and public health (Johns Hopkins University, Ph.D.). Her Ph.D. fellowship with the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship for Water, Climate, and Health has provided her with an interdisciplinary education.
Natalie is an avid cyclist and devoted home cook who is raising four young children to cherish the natural world and recognize its vital role in our well-being and the future of generations to come.
