CIH supports high school and undergraduate scholars through NativeVision programming and scholarships and internships through the Diversity Summer Internship Program at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Established in 1996, NativeVision awards four $5,000 college scholarships annually to outstanding youth entering their first year of college with a commitment to education, athletics, and leadership. The Center gives out four scholarships each year to deserving students. One of the scholarships will be given in the name of a very special athlete-mentor that we lost in 2022 – Alf Jacques. Alf led an amazing life and was a great Haudenosaunee lacrosse stick maker. He was one of our most adored NativeVision volunteers, teaching Indigenous children about the Creator’s Game. Scholarships are available to all students, regardless of background, identity, or tribal affiliation.
The Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP) is an 8-week summer program that provides highly qualified undergraduates with graduate-level research experience in the biomedical or public health field. In addition to their research placements, interns engage in professional leadership development focused on critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills.
While DSIP is administered through the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Center for Indigenous Health offers dedicated opportunities within the program. Each year, the Center supports up to three DSIP interns who work on research projects led by Center faculty most of whom are Indigenous or have worked in close partnership with Indigenous communities for many years. These placements allow interns to contribute to impactful community-based research while gaining mentorship from accomplished Johns Hopkins researchers in a collaborative, challenging, and supportive environment.
