Brief study summary

The Great Lakes Hub is working to develop a 24-month, two-phase feasibility study, funded by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC), to assess the potential for a state-wide research initiative in Minnesota. The study will focus on understanding holistic health outcomes among American Indian (AI) youth in the state, with particular attention to physical activity, and identifying barriers and sources of strength in promoting health among AI youth. 

This work is one component of a larger, multi-year “IndigeFit Kids” campaign led by the SMSC Tribe. Read more about their initiative here: Link to SMSC.

Study background

We are conducting a planning study focused on the health of American Indian youth in Minnesota. Our goals are to build partnerships and determine potential need for a possible future state-wide study representative of all American Indian youth.

What are we doing?

Phase 1: We will conduct a review of published and grey literature to identify existing data related to AI youth physical activity and holistic health. Phase 2: We will work to engage various state-wide Tribal and local leaders with vested interests in AI health to spread awareness and assess readiness and willingness for a state-wide study of AI youth health. 

We are creating a Youth Research Council made up of American Indian youth in Minnesota to help us understand their health concerns, priorities, and ideas about what initiatives truly support their well-being. 

How will this help improve health in communities?

The study will help identify gaps in awareness about AI youth health in Minnesota. Future studies could address these gaps to improve health outcomes. 

Input from the IndigeFit Kids Youth Research Council will provide guidance on developing programs that better match the real needs of American Indian youth in Minnesota and support stronger health outcomes across the state.
