Title: Public Health Training Certificate in American Indian Health
Location: Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe
My goal for entering into the certificate program for Native American Public Health is twofold.I desire to continue to encourage Native American families and children to empower themselves with the tools and knowledge they need to remain healthy and productive members of our Tribe.
I also feel that it is important to arm myself with the best information and knowledge that I can acquire to best serve my community through continuing education and staying on top of the trends of health, safety and wellness in Native American Communities.
Biography
Sherry started her career in the field of Early Childhood Education. She received her Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education from Ashford University. She has since worked as a Head Start Teacher, Head Start Family Services Worker, Child Care Subsidy Case Worker and Child Care Subsidy Manager. Ms. Ely-Mendes has dedicated over 20 years of service to families and children in Native country as well as those in need outside the reservation.
Sherry is currently working in the Transportation Planning and Transportation Safety field. Utilizing her management and educational outreach skills she has been able to develop and move forward laws to require both car seat and seatbelt use on the reservation. Ely-Mendes additionally works in partnership with the local health clinic staff and the regional Injury Prevention Specialist with the Indian Health Services to promote safe practices to reduce injury and death in Native communities. Sherry completed her Public Health Training Certificate for American Indian Health Professionals at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and plans to continue her work in transportation safety while bring awareness to her community.
