Valerie Coho-Mescal

Biography

Valerie, a member of the Navajo Nation, is Kinyaa’aanii — Towering House People, born for the Tsenahabiinii — Sleep Rock. Her maternal grandpa is of the Tl’ógi — Weavers or Hairy One and her paternal grandpa is of the Haltsooi Dine — Meadow People. She joined the Center for Indigenous Health in June of 2006 working with the Behavioral Health team.

Valerie currently works as a Research Program Assistant with the Infectious Disease team in Gallup, NM. Valerie learned more about public health since she started at the Center. Prior to joining the Center, Valerie worked in behavioral health which included rehabilitation, working with families, parenting classes and home health care. She also worked in the fields insurance, construction and travel. Upon returning to the reservation, she had the opportunity to work with Native American populations promoting health and wellness.

She developed a passion for working in community health to improve the health of Native communities. Valerie has completed her Practical Nursing from Gateway Community College, and has completed the Public Health Training Certificate for American Indian Health Professionals through Johns Hopkins University. Valerie continues with her education in Substance Abuse counseling and team building. She enjoys reading, spending time with family, doing puzzles and craft projects.
